This position is located in the DC State Board of Education (SBOE) and functions as Public Affairs Specialist. Incumbent is responsible for clearly communicating the mission and impact of SBOE across multiple channels, including websites, social media, press engagement, and content creation (newsletters, video, blogs, and other media). He/she serves as the public information officer for the agency.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develops and implements a strategic communications and public engagement strategy and helps design and implement internal communication strategies to promote collaboration and inform the public about the agency vision and mission. Presents information on communication and public engagement recommendations in the form of memoranda, status and final reports for review by the Executive Director and Board members. Advises management of the best method and creative approach for developing literature such as handouts, PowerPoint presentations, web pages, and brochures to reach targeted education stakeholders.
Develops and coordinates all public information materials, publications, newsletters, multimedia productions, and activities to ensure adherence to vision and mission. Writes and edits communications materials, including press releases, blog posts, statements, annual reports, opinion pieces, fact sheets, talking points, and other communications materials for public dissemination.
Qualifications and Education
This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position such as, organization skills to take on projects, meet deadlines, facilitate reports, and coordinate office communication or performing similar work,
Work is predominately sedentary; however, some walking. standing, and bending are encountered. The work is primarily performed in a typical office setting.

This position is an Excepted Service Appointment. Employees serving in Excepted Service positions serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Domicile Requirement – Excepted Service appointees must either be a District resident at the time of their appointment or become a District resident within 180 days of their appointment date.
Salary Range: $60,896 – $91,344
