(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Tuesday, February 21 at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser; and Ventris Gibson, Director of the Department of Human Resources (DCHR), will hold a press conference to propose new legislation that would offer incentives to attract more District residents for jobs in local government.
The Government Employee Residency Act of 2017 will provide student loan repayment assistance for select newly-hired workers and allow DCHR to expedite the hiring of “hard-to-fill,” non-competitive positions that have critical hiring needs.
Mayor Bowser has placed an emphasis on hiring more District residents for open positions across the government. The Administration has revised residency rules to allow residency preference points to be added to a candidate’s application, as well as hosted Direct Connect hiring events to connect District residents with District government employment opportunities. In Fiscal Year 2016, DCHR hired 7,429 new employees, with 51 percent of them being DC residents.
Following the press conference, Mayor Bowser and District officials will join DC Government employees on a conference call to discuss their budget ideas and suggestions.
